6 Tips to Prevent Skin Infections in Children

Parents dread the thought of their children getting skin infections. Children are prone to infections as they don’t let anything get in their way while they jump around and have a good time. No matter how much you try to keep them away from infections, it almost seems impossible to prevent skin infections from happening. They develop cuts and scrapes – which is part of growing up and learning when they reach school age. Therefore, as parents, you need to try your best and be well-equipped to face such issues. Instead of adopting a defensive approach, you need to consider a preventive one by looking at different methods and using the best skincare products out there.

How Do You Know if There’s a Skin Infection in the First Place?

The list of skin diseases is long. They are caused by different micro-organisms, including bacteria, fungus, or virus. The main symptoms of infection are rashes and swelling that are present in the infected area. In severe circumstances, fever and chills can also occur. Similarly, some infections, if taken for granted, can cause skin pain, redness, pus drain, itchiness, and a burning sensation around the affected part.

How to Prevent Skin Infections?

The best way to keep infections at bay is to start working on increasing immunity. A healthy body can deal with minor infections on its own. Therefore, it is essential that we work on improving our child's resistance to help them fight any organisms trying to invade their system. Here are some tips to keep the germs away!

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

Eating whole foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meat, and whole grains help build a robust immune system. Foods with high sugar content and fats don't support the body with fighting against diseases, instead, they add fuel to the fire by aggravating the illness symptoms.

2. Get Enough Rest

Children who get enough rest have a better resistance against diseases. A body that is not well-rested is prone to harmful microorganisms. Sleep helps recharge the body and recuperates what we are lacking.

3. Stay Hydrated

Water is essential to maintaining a balance within the body. Similarly, it is an easy way of preventing skin infections. Water not only helps you cleanse the system but also keeps cells relished. This prepares the white blood cells for a showdown!

4. Shower Regularly

Cleanliness is a virtue for a reason! Taking a bath is another way to prevent skin infection in kids. A body that is free of germs and dirt stays healthy. Bathing makes it harder for bacteria to enter our system through cuts and lesions. Another aspect that should be mentioned is the positive effect it has on our minds.

5. Wash Hands Regularly

Skin infections can lead to more complications if our hands are not clean. Using the different skincare tips we’ve mentioned can help as long as you stick to the basics like washing your hands regularly. But washing hands with water alone is not enough. The purpose of washing hands is to get rid of germs and dirt. You have to make sure you develop a habit of washing hands regularly with soap and water. Keeping a hand sanitizer also helps, especially if you are in the outdoors.

6. Clean Wounds Right Away

Most infections happen because of open wounds that have not been cleaned. Therefore, it is essential that you get your child a skin infection treatment as soon as you see a scar. If you or your child get any cuts, keep the wound under running water to reduce the risk of infection. Wash around the wound with soap making sure to not get soap in the wound. It is useful if you use antiseptic soap. If the wound is deep, seek medical attention right away as the deeper the injury, the higher the chances of it catching an infection.
