The morning after pill is a form of emergency contraception, also known as an ECP (emergency contraceptive pill). It is a contraceptive pill taken after unprotected sex or if an issue arose through protected sex (such as a broken condom or a missed pill).

Although called the morning after pill, an ECP can be taken up to 96 hours after unprotected sex (but it is recommended to take it within 24 hours). In this way, a potential pregnancy can be avoided. The emergency contraceptive pill works by containing a high dose of a progestogen hormone, which inhibits ovulation and prevents pregnancy from occurring. With this being the case, the contraceptive pill does not work if you are already pregnant, but will 85 percent of pregnancies occurring within the four-day window.

Considering side effects

It is important to be aware of the potential side effects of the morning-after pill in order to fully understand it as a whole. Although side effects are uncommon, some women who take the morning after pill feel nausea or have tender breasts or headaches. It is also possible for some women to have an irregular period after taking the emergency contraceptive pill.

If after taking an emergency contraceptive pill you believe you are pregnant, if your period is seven days late or if your period is shorter or lighter than usual, it is highly recommended that you talk to a doctor or nurse.
